Family Sundays


 

 

 

Join us in the Discovery Studio at the Art Gallery of Peterborough on the first Sunday of the month for guided art activities. No registration required, just drop in!
Children must be accompanied by an Adult.

Times: 1 pm to 4 pm
Location: Art Gallery of Peterborough Studio
Cost: Free

February 7- stuff to do with string – knitting, crochet, knots and braids
March 7 – create your own mythological beasts

Note there is no Family Sunday for July, August. September. 
Family Sunday returns in October, November, and December 2010.

Celebrate Canada at the Art Gallery of Peterborough!
Make a flag, draw a map and paint a picture of your favourite part of Canada. The Art Gallery of Peterborough has open studio art activities for families on Canada Day Thursday July 1, 2010 from 1 pm to 4 pm. No fee or registration required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SPARK Summer Programs for Children and Young Teens


 

Eco-Art with guest artist-instructor Lori Beavis

July 5 to 9, full days
9 am to 4 pm  - ages 7 and up
Full day camp fee $145 ($135 for AGP family members) / week

Get Eco-Arty!  Create earth-friendly art with natural materials.  Experiment with organic papermaking and make 3-dimensional books.   We will create our own environment of sculptures, sundial garden stones and  imaginary trees. Drawing  inspiration from our surroundings, we’ll build art with a gentle impact  on the earth. Bring a lunch and be prepared to dig and collect from the earth in this outdoorsy approach to art.

Zoom Away with guest artist-instructor Lori Beavis

July 12 to 16, half days
9 am to 12 noon – ages 4 to 6
1 pm to 4 pm - ages 7 to 10
Fee $ 70 ($65 for AGP family members) / week

Painting! Building! Printmaking! Using  crazy materials, from  a fish to a cereal box find your inspiration in your favourite books and create art from the stories you love. Working in 2 and 3 dimensions try some printmaking with tissue paper and styrofoam, paint on unusual surfaces and explore quilt blocks and paper collages as you illustrate your favourite story.

Fill your summer with colour and creativity. Start with basic drawing skills and then explore the magic of watercolours, acrylics, and sculpture. Paint a ‘magic carpet’, illustrate a foldout book and sculpt with clay.

For the animal lover and young artist alike! By sketching from both photographs and live models, learn techniques of modelling, shading, contour & gesture drawing, proportion, perspective and creating texture. Creating drawings of animals and natural objects will teach you how to observe and draw your world.

Wild Wearable Art with the Art Gallery Education Team

Aug 3 to 6, 4 half-days
9 am to 12 noon – ages 7 and up
Fee $ 55 ($50 for AGP family members)/week

Imagine the possibilities! A week of fabric painting, sewing, tie-dying and more, creating wearable and hang-able art.  Design and make your own ipod/game/phone case out of felt. 

Patchwork Painting! - My First Art Show

Aug 9 to 13, half-days

Get ready for loads of fun as you make the coolest artwork ever-the world’s longest, skinniest painting for a gallery exhibition! This amazing 8-foot long painting will blend together all sorts of art techniques,  like printmaking and etching, along with others you’ve never tried before- like drawing with your mouth, or painting without brushes! And you get to show off your colourful creations with an exhibition and art opening in September at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

Aug 16 to 20 full days 
9 am to 4 pm – teens ages 12 and up
Fee $155 ($145 for AGP family members)

See the world in a whole new way, in a teen class sure to inspire  young minds.  Play with unexpected art materials and explore your creativity. We will learn from  contemporary artists who are using new, surprising ways to make and display art. In addition to creating a truly unique art piece from beginning to finish, you also get to see your art exhibited, here in the Art Gallery of Peterborough in an exhibition opening in the fall of 2010.

My Summer Fun

Aug 23 to 27
9 am to 12 noon for ages 6 to 9
Sign on for a half day or a whole week!
Fee  $15 per half day ($13 for AGP family member) 
OR $ 70 for the full week of half day camps ($65 for AGP family members).


 

Each day will be something different with the Art Gallery of Peterborough Education Team; Instructors, gallery staff and trained students who work together to make a lively, fun and safe atmosphere for learning and creating.

About SPARK

  • SPARK offers instructed and fully supervised art camps for children & youth.
  • Artist-instructors deliver programs with gallery staff, assisted by trained youth volunteers. 
  • Registration is capped at 15 per class to allow for individual attention.
  • Programs are designed for the age range specified.
  • All programs take place in the Art Gallery of Peterborough Studio and environs.  
  • Breaks and lunchtime (for all-day camps) are supervised.
  • Supervision is provided for 10 minutes prior to and after each class.   
  • Please provide a peanut – free snack / lunch and painting smock or shirt. 
  • Children should be prepared to go outside. Please dress for the weather.
  • All effort is made to accommodate, however programs may be cancelled or substituted in emergencies or in the event of insufficient registration.  In this event, a full refund or credit is available.
  • Unless otherwise specified, the Art Gallery of Peterborough reserves the right to photograph all programs and activities for future promotional purposes.

Program financial subsidies are available to City of Peterborough residents.

Program Withdrawal – Refunds may be requested prior to the start of the program. An administration fee of $5/ class will be withheld. Refund requests are not accepted after the program has started except in emergencies and are pro-rated according to the number of classes completed minus the administration fee. In the event of a course cancellation a full refund or credit is available.

About our Instructors

Lori Beavis joins SPARK from Concordia University, Montreal, where she is completing her PhD in Art Education.  She has extensive experience teaching children’s programs in art and dance in Toronto, Montreal and Peterborough.

Rowena Dykins studied fine art in England, Concordia University, Montreal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions and has taught children’s art classes at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

Anne Cavanagh is a portrait artist and instructor. She studied art in the United States, France, and England. Anne combined her love of art and science with a degree in medical Illustration. Anne teaches regularly in adult and children’s classes at the Gallery.

Rebecca Reynolds achieved her BFA at Concordia University and earned her Expressive Arts Certificate at Fleming College, Haliburton School of the Arts. Rebecca has more than 15 years experience instructing children with her creative, dynamic teaching style and  won over parents and children  at the Art Gallery March Break camp in 2010.

Art Gallery of Peterborough Education Team are instructors, gallery staff and trained students who work together to make a lively, fun and safe atmosphere for learning and creating.

SPARK Youth Volunteers

Join the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s SPARK! Volunteer Team. Volunteer for a minimum of 2 weeks during July and August, working with children in art camps under the direction of art gallery staff and SPARK program instructors. Training is provided and hours can be used toward high school community service credits.    Minimum is age 14 or entering grade 9.

Weekend Workshop / Saturday & Sunday
May 15  &16 / 10 am to 4 pm
Cost  $ 90 non-members / $ 80 AGP members

Join artist Gary Blundell in this adult weekend workshop, en plein air. Gary will introduce sketching outdoors using pencils, ink, pastels, watercolours, oils and acrylics. 
Using the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s Studio as a base, the group will visit locations around town and sketch several different settings such as buildings, bridges, the canal and shorelines, as well as the natural environment. Instruction will examine colour and shading and both realistic or abstracted interpretations. 
A material supply list is available at registration.

Gary Blundell has exhibited widely with recent solo shows in Toronto’s Art Square Gallery, the Art Gallery of Northumberland, the Rails End Gallery in Haliburton, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. In  2009 Gary’s work was featured in Breaking Ground: Contemporary Landscapes at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

Gary’s teaching experience includes Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Trent University, Haliburton School of the Arts, Burlington Art Centre, and the Ontario Arts Council/Rails End Gallery, Artists in Education Program. He has been artist in residence in Straumur Arts Commune in Iceland and for the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland.
