Join us in the Discovery Studio at the Art Gallery of Peterborough on the first Sunday of most months for guided art activities. No fee or registration required, just drop in between 1 pm and 4 pm!

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

2012 Children’s Saturday Art Classes

Art Gallery of Peterborough Art Classes for children feature small classes for individual attention. Instructors are practicing artists who bring a wealth of experience and creativity to arts education. All classes take place in the AGP studio. Pre-registration is required. Saturdays, 10 am to 12:30 pm. Ages 7 and up. City of Peterborough families may apply for subsidy. Contact 705 742 7777 ext 1827 for subsidy information.

ART OUTSIDE THE LINES

Saturdays, Feb 18 to March 10, (4 weeks)

Ages 5 to 8. Cost $ 65 includes materials.

Get ready to discover your own unique expression as you fill your sketchbook with colour in this light-hearted romp through different art techniques.

Rebecca Reynolds achieved her BFA at Concordia University and earned her teaching degree from Nipissing University. Rebecca has more than 15 years experience instructing children with her creative, dynamic teaching style and won over parents and children at the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s SPARK and March Break in 2010 and 2011.


EXPLORING ART FUNDAMENTALS

Saturdays, March 24 to April 21, 2012 (5 weeks),

Ages 7 and up. Cost $75 includes materials

Start by drawing and painting and move into experimenting with sculpture. This introdductory class is for young artists looking to explore their creativity through a mixed media approach.

Shannon Taylor graduated from The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in media arts. She Is an active member of the arts community in Peterborough, well- known for mural work. Shannon has been instructing in AGP school programs, Family Sundays and art camps.


INTRODUCING PAINTING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

with John Climenhage

Saturdays, May 5 to June 9, 2012 (6 weeks),
1:30 pm to 4 pm
Ages 7 and up. Cost $90 includes materials

Here is the introductory program on still life and painting from nature. Children will be introduced to perspective, composition, and colour theory, in this fun filled series of classes.

Instructor John Climenhage has been Artist in Residence at Prince of Wales Public School for the past two years , and has had great success at bringing art instruction to students of all levels, making it relevant to the practice of artmaking for participants at a variety of stages of artistic development.

* Programs are designed for the recommended ages.

Cost is $18 per half-day ($16.20 for AGP family members) and includes all materials.
City of Peterborough families may apply for a fee subsidy.

ART CIRCUS

Monday March 12

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the circus! Paint a clown face, decorate your tent with banners and patterns. Learn how to 'chin cole' beautiful paper and print a ring master, elephant and tiger. Let your imagination soar above the big top as you add a trapeze swinger or tightrope walker.

WINDOWS UNDER THE SEA

Tuesday March 13

Look at the shapes and colours of the beautiful under-water world. Learn to create a stained glass effect with paper, glue , stencils and paint. Create a light-catching ‘stained glass’ to hang in your window and watch as the sun brings your seascape to life.

NATURE STORY

Wednesday March 14

Create a nature story and illustrate it by constructing your own 3D pop-up book! Learn how to make plants grow and flowers bloom with the turn of a page. Bugs will crawl ...and birds will fly away with your story!

MAD HATTERS

Thursday March 15

Come on down the rabbit hole and create art inspired by Alice and her wacky friends from Lewis Carroll's Wonderland. Learn from the Mad Hatter how to make a fabulous hat to wear to our Tea Party!

RAINBOW COLOURS

Friday March 16

Explore the kaleidoscope world of colour in this active exploration of painting. Sponge, splatter, dribble and brush away the winter blues by picking up a palette full of vibrant colour!

About our Instructors:

Marianne Collins studied art at Bealart and has achieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. Marianne has taught workshops in elementary schools, universities, libraries, museums and art galleries, including the Art Gallery of Peterborough’s SPARK. Marianne guides children on a creative journey, learning fine arts and crafts along the way, with excitement and fun at every stop.

Rebecca Reynolds achieved her BFA at Concordia University and earned her teaching degree from Nipissing University. SUBSIDIES
The City of Peterborough offers a Recreational Fee Subsidy Program to assist qualifying families with the cost of registration for recreational programs and camps for children under the age of 19 years. The maximum subsidy per child is $200.00 per year.
Families residing within the City of Peterborough are welcome to apply for subsidy by contacting the Recreation Division at 742-7777 ext. 1827.
Subsidy application information is confidential and is protected under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act R.S.O. 1990. Recipients of Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) may inquire about their eligibility by contacting the Social Services Office at 705-748-8830 ext. 3854.

PROGRAM WITHDRAWAL *
Refunds may be requested up to 5 business days prior to the start of the program. An administration fee of $5/ class or 10% of class fees will be withheld. Refund requests are not accepted after that time except in emergencies and are pro-rated according to the number of classes completed, minus the administration fee. In the event of a course cancellation a full refund or credit is available. (*Including subsidy).

Hone your skills as a practicing artist in this 3-hour open workshop. Previous life drawing experience is strongly recommended. There is no instruction in this workshop. Life models provided. Bring your own drawing equipment and be prepared to work in a group. Registration is limited to 11 participants. Must be 19 and over.

Portraying the human figure incorporates emotion, movement, proportions and personality. Anne Cavanagh introduces students to the skills and creativity involved in drawing people. Working from a live model, students will learn drawing techniques, observational skills and proportions of the figure. All skill levels welcome. A suggested material list is available.

Anne Cavanagh is a Peterborough-area portrait/figure artist whose work centers around the relationship and curiousities of an individual(s) with their natural environmant. Anne's work is often viewed as being raw, organic and minimalist in its depiction. This rawness is in mirror by her choice of medium. Anne's work is often grey-scale and created in 'mediums from the earth' (primarily graphite). Her work also includes small amounts of colour either in the form of paint (acrylic or watercolour) or untraditional materials, such as dried grasses and beeswax. Anne studied art in the United States, France and England, combining her love of art and science by obtaining her BA in Pre-medical Illustration. Anne will be exhibiting at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, January to March, 2012.

Encaustic Workshop with Victoria Wallace

Ages: Adult class (16 and up). Max 8 per day.
Cost: For a one-day, workshop including instruction, all encaustic supplies and materials is $ 115.00 (+ HST)

Encaustic is painting with pigmented melted beeswax. Victoria’s comprehensive encaustic workshops give participants a thorough knowledge of the encaustic medium and method - from the classical to the experimental. Artists at all levels with backgrounds in almost any medium will find these workshops are an exciting opportunity to expand their visual vocabulary with wax. Beginners welcome. Bring a lunch and smock to wear.

Victoria Wallace is a multi-media artist working, actively exhibiting and conducting workshops in acrylic, encaustic, and sculptural media. She had a successful mural and specialty paint finish company in Toronto for over 25 years. Victoria’s extensive commissions include work for television, film, theatre, businesses and private collections across Canada and internationally. Victoria instructs art workshops in Peterborough and Toronto at art schools and galleries.Victoria was featured on the 27th Annual Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour.

Back by popular demand! Here is a course for advanced artists and beginners alike who want to explore mixed media materials. Boxes, decorative papers, photographs, beads, threads, wire, nails, twigs, gold leaf and acrylic paints all can inspire new creativity. Participants are encouraged to bring in their own project ideas.

Anne Renouf studied Fine Art at the University of Toronto, specializing in drawing, painting and printmaking. She teaches regularly through the Art Gallery of Peterborough, and shows locally at Christensen Fine Art, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, and the Kawartha Autumn Studio Tour.
